The visit comes as Trump intensifies preparations for the United States’ 250th Independence Anniversary celebrations, an initiative his administration has promoted as a way to honor the nation’s history while highlighting its vision for America’s future ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump’s trip to the town of Medora also marked the first official flight aboard a newly designated Air Force One aircraft—a Boeing 747 donated to the United States by Qatar.
The aircraft has been repainted in red, white, and dark blue, a color scheme personally selected by Trump. The plane has generated controversy in the United States over the acceptance of such a valuable gift from a foreign government, as well as the cost and speed of its refurbishment to meet presidential standards.
Trump dismissed the criticism, while the United States Air Force confirmed that the aircraft meets all security, communications, and operational requirements necessary for presidential travel.
Before departing on the flight, Trump told reporters that Qatar had “treated America very well” and thanked the country’s leadership for the gift, describing Qatar’s Emir as “a very nice man.”
Asked about the cost to American taxpayers, Trump argued that refurbishing the donated aircraft would cost significantly less than purchasing and customizing a completely new presidential aircraft.
“We’re very appreciative of it, and I think the whole country appreciates it,” Trump said. “The old Air Force One was no longer representative of the image our country deserves.”
He added that the aircraft has been equipped with advanced security systems, state-of-the-art communications technology, and all the modifications required for use by the President of the United States.
Trump has made the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence a central focus of his presidency. The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is scheduled to officially open on Saturday. The 8,919-square-meter facility overlooks Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
Trump has frequently praised Theodore Roosevelt, who served as U.S. president from 1901 to 1909. Roosevelt is widely remembered for his conservation efforts, expanding America’s role on the global stage, supporting the construction of the Panama Canal, and helping establish the United States as a major world power in the early 20th century.
As part of the Independence celebrations, Trump is also expected to visit Mount Rushmore, home to the giant granite carvings of four former U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
On Saturday, Trump is also expected to deliver a major address during Independence Day celebrations in Washington, D.C.. The festivities will conclude with a 35-minute fireworks display over the Potomac River.
