South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed his sorrow over the news, describing Adams as one of the country’s brightest young football talents.
He said South African football had lost a gifted player and extended condolences to Adams’ family, teammates, and supporters who had followed his journey from a promising youngster to the international stage.
The South African Police Service confirmed that an investigation has been opened after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in the Schotschekloof area of Cape Town.
Authorities said the exact cause of death has not yet been determined. Local reports indicate Adams was found dead in a bathroom, with early speculation suggesting he may have died by suicide. However, police have not confirmed those reports, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns FC in January 2025. During his time at Sundowns, he helped the club win domestic league titles and the CAF Champions League.
He was also part of South Africa’s squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and later earned a place in the national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where South Africa made history by advancing beyond the group stage for the first time.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said he was deeply saddened by Adams’ death, adding that the thoughts of the global football community are with his family, friends, teammates, and everyone affected by the loss.
If confirmed, Adams’ death would be another reminder of the importance of mental health awareness in professional sport. Authorities are continuing their investigation, and no official cause of death has yet been announced.
