The announcement was made by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, who said Russian air defense systems shot down numerous drones launched by Ukraine toward the city on Sunday.
According to Sobyanin, about 45 drones were intercepted as they approached Moscow.
He said most of the drones were destroyed by Russia’s air defense systems before entering Moscow’s airspace, while others came close to the city but crashed in surrounding areas after being shot down.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense also reported that its forces intercepted nearly 350 drones across the country on Sunday, describing the attack as one of the largest in recent weeks.
The latest incident comes as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, with both sides increasingly relying on drones, missiles, and other long-range weapons to strike military and strategic targets.
In late June, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a 40-day campaign aimed at increasing pressure on Russia through intensified military operations and actions designed to disrupt the Russian economy.
Since then, Russian officials say they have seen a rise in Ukrainian attacks targeting energy infrastructure, maritime transport facilities, and other strategic sites. Moscow claims these attacks endanger civilians, while Ukraine maintains that it is striking facilities that support Russia’s war effort.
Russia says it has responded with missile and drone strikes targeting Ukraine’s military-industrial infrastructure, insisting that its operations are directed at military objectives rather than civilian areas.
