Speaking to Labour supporters, Burnham declared, “I am ready.”
He said he is prepared to take over the leadership of the Labour Party and continue implementing the vision and policies introduced by Starmer.
Burnham praised Starmer for transforming Labour from one of the most difficult periods in its history into a party capable of securing a major election victory and improving the lives of British citizens.
Among Starmer’s achievements, Burnham highlighted reducing waiting times for patients in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and restoring Britain’s credibility on the international stage.
Burnham is one of Labour’s most experienced politicians. Before becoming Mayor of Greater Manchester, he served in several ministerial positions under previous Labour governments.
According to Reuters, Burnham is expected to assume office as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Monday, July 20, 2026.
Burnham entered politics during Tony Blair’s tenure as Prime Minister. He has served as a Member of Parliament since 2001 and has held several cabinet positions, including Secretary of State for Health, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and also served at the Treasury.
