US tightens sanctions on Iran, warns countries trading with Tehran

The United States has announced a new round of economic sanctions against Iran, aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran and further isolating it from the global economy.

Washington also warned countries and companies doing business with Iran that they could face consequences if they continue to support economic activities targeted by the sanctions.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the new measures represent a significant escalation of economic pressure against Iran and its international partners.

“We have launched economic pressure at a new level against Iran and its partners around the world,” Bessent said. “Our goal is to reduce economic activities that threaten security.”

The United States said the sanctions could affect foreign companies and countries involved in trade and financial transactions with Iran. Washington argues that the measures are intended to further restrict Iran’s ability to generate revenue through international commerce.

Iran has faced various US and international sanctions for years, with restrictions affecting key sectors of its economy, including banking, energy and trade. The sanctions have contributed to economic difficulties, but Iranian authorities have continued to pursue their policies despite growing pressure from Washington.

China has remained one of Iran’s most important trading partners, despite repeated attempts by the United States to limit commercial ties between Beijing and Tehran. Other countries have also continued economic relations with Iran, creating challenges for Washington’s efforts to isolate the country.

The US said countries and companies that continue to engage in activities covered by the new sanctions could also face restrictions, including being cut off from parts of the American financial system.

The latest move is expected to increase tensions between Washington and Tehran, whose relations have remained strained over several issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security and its relationships with groups and governments opposed to US interests.

Iran has repeatedly condemned US sanctions, describing them as illegal and accusing Washington of using economic pressure as a political weapon. Tehran has also sought to strengthen trade ties with countries outside the Western bloc in an effort to reduce the impact of the restrictions.

Analysts say the effectiveness of the new sanctions will largely depend on how governments, banks and international companies respond. While the United States believes economic pressure can force changes in Iran’s behaviour, Tehran has continued to show resistance and has sought alternative ways to maintain its international trade.

The new sanctions could further complicate global economic relations, particularly for countries that maintain strong commercial ties with both the United States and Iran.
