London, UK, The United Kingdom is taking strong new action against immigration abuse, announcing that it will stop issuing study visas to students from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan. In addition, some work visas for Afghans will also be suspended.

Officials say the decision comes after a sharp rise in students applying for asylum after arriving in the UK. Between 2021 and 2025, asylum applications by students from these countries jumped more than 470%.

“Emergency Brake” Hits Visa Applications

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the move as an “emergency brake,” a power rarely used to quickly stop visas from being issued.

“Britain will always help people fleeing war and persecution, but our visa system must not be misused,” Mahmood said. “This decision targets those trying to exploit our generosity.”

The ban will be formally introduced through a change in immigration rules this Thursday, and Mahmood is expected to outline tougher asylum checks in a public speech.

Rising Migration Sparks Political Pressure

Migration has become a hot topic in UK politics, as hard-right parties like Reform UK gain support with strict anti-immigration messages.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government has already taken steps to speed up deportations and review asylum claims more frequently. Starting soon, asylum seekers may have their refugee status reviewed every 30 months, aiming to make the UK less attractive to abuse claims.

Universities and Critics Push Back

The policy has sparked concerns from universities and student groups, who warn it could hurt Britain’s reputation as a top destination for international study.

“Stopping visas for thousands of genuine students is a blunt tool,” said a representative from Universities UK International. “Many of these students come to learn and contribute, not to make asylum claims.”

Some human rights groups also warn that the ban could harm people genuinely fleeing conflict, leaving them with fewer safe options to study abroad.

What’s Next

The UK government says this temporary visa ban will allow them to tighten rules and ensure only genuine students are granted visas in the future.

But questions remain: will this policy expand to other countries, and how will it affect the UK’s universities and global image?
