According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Abiy took the oath during the first regular session marking the beginning of the first year of the seventh parliamentary term.
The formation of the new government follows Ethiopia’s seventh general elections, which were held on June 1, 2026.
Addressing those attending the ceremony, Prime Minister Abiy said the national elections had gone through difficult circumstances, comparing the process to gold being refined in fire. He said that despite the challenges the elections faced, they had further strengthened the culture of democracy in Ethiopia.
He said victories and defeats among political parties are a normal part of democratic competition, but emphasized that Ethiopia has no citizens who have lost, arguing that all Ethiopians have emerged as winners.
Abiy called on citizens to remain united, saying the challenges facing the country can only be overcome if Ethiopians work together and move forward as brothers and sisters.
He also highlighted the rapid and unpredictable changes taking place around the world, stressing the importance of remaining vigilant and preparing for the future.
The Prime Minister emphasized that identifying and pursuing what is in the national interest is a major responsibility for the present generation.
