Burkina Faso has inaugurated its first gold refinery in Ouagadougou, marking a significant step in Africa’s growing drive to process its natural resources locally and create greater economic value on the continent.
With an initial capacity of 164 tonnes a year, the $19 million state-owned facility will refine, test, certify and securely store gold domestically. In addition, a planned expansion could increase capacity to 515 tonnes annually.
Beyond refining gold, the facility is expected to create about 100 direct jobs and more than 5,000 indirect jobs, while supporting wider opportunities across the mining sector.
The development further highlights Africa’s push to strengthen local value chains, expand industrial capacity and ensure more benefits from the continent’s rich mineral resources remain within African economies.
