The earthquake hit the Southeast Asian nation on June 8, 2026, at around 7:00 p.m. Rwandan time. It came after authorities had issued tsunami warnings for countries including the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia.
Videos shared on social media showed buildings collapsing and landslides occurring in various parts of the country.
A statement released on June 8, 2026, by the country’s disaster management authorities indicated that 31 of the fatalities occurred in the Soccsksargen region, while the remaining deaths were reported in the Davao region.
The earthquake has reportedly injured more than 130 people and displaced around 10,000 families from their homes. Authorities also said that 12 people remain missing.
Mindanao is the second-largest island among the more than 7,600 islands that make up the Philippines. It is home to over 26 million people.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that emergency response teams had been deployed to rescue those affected by the disaster.
President Marcos also stated that schools in the hardest-hit areas may remain closed, especially as the disaster coincided with the start of the new school term.
Following the major quake, 130 aftershocks were recorded, ranging in magnitude from 1.3 to 6.7.
The Philippines is frequently affected by earthquakes. In September 2025, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Visayas region, killing more than 70 people.
