Elon Musk’s AI Grok linked to U.S. defense operations in Iran

The United States government has disclosed that Grok, the artificial intelligence technology developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, was used in military operations carried out against Iran.

The information was revealed in a court filing dated June 15, in which the U.S. government explained why the operation of power-generating turbines at xAI’s major data center should not be halted. The facility is the subject of a lawsuit filed by environmental groups, which argue that the equipment contributes to air pollution.

Turbines are machines used to generate electricity and are often located in remote areas.

In the filing, the U.S. Department of Justice argued that the lawsuit could negatively affect national security, the economy, and energy infrastructure because it seeks to disrupt the power supply used to develop artificial intelligence systems that support U.S. military operations.

Government attorneys cited testimony from Cameron Stanley, the Director of Artificial Intelligence at the U.S. Department of Defense. Stanley stated that Grok is currently being used within Project Maven, a military program that employs artificial intelligence to assist in identifying, selecting, and tracking targets for military strikes.

According to Stanley, the Maven Smart Systems platform helped U.S. forces deploy more than 2,000 weapons against 2,000 separate targets within a 96-hour period during an operation known as Operation Epic Fury, which he described as the U.S. military action carried out against Iran in February.

He praised Musk’s technology, saying that the Grok Gov Model significantly improved the efficiency and speed of military operations.
