France has requested a criminal investigation into the alleged mistreatment of French nationals detained after Israeli forces intercepted an aid flotilla bound for Gaza last week.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said the decision followed a report from France’s Consul General in Turkey detailing accusations of physical abuse and degrading treatment during the activists’ detention.
Speaking to France Inter radio, Barrot said the testimonies described alleged beatings, exposure to cold conditions, repeated humiliation, and claims of sexual violence against French citizens aboard the vessel.
“Based on the report submitted by our Consul General, these acts could constitute criminal offences,” Barrot said.
The vessel was part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, an activist-led mission attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza amid worsening conditions in the Palestinian territory.
Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla in international waters during the voyage, according to organisers. Activists later alleged that several detainees suffered injuries during the operation, with some requiring medical treatment after their release.
At least 15 activists also reported allegations of sexual assault, including claims of rape, according to organisers and participants involved in the mission.
Israeli authorities have not publicly responded in detail to the accusations.
All activists detained during the operation have since been released and returned to their respective countries.
The incident has intensified international attention on Israel’s blockade of Gaza and the treatment of foreign activists seeking to deliver aid to the territory.
