Iran’s state television showed Mostafa, Meysam, and Masoud Khamenei praying in front of the coffins placed at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla in Tehran, where the official funeral ceremony was held.
The Iranian government announced a multi-day mourning program for Khamenei, which includes transporting his body to the holy Shia cities in Iraq.
Following the official state funeral, Khamenei’s body was displayed publicly on Saturday alongside the bodies of members of his family who were also killed.
Reports confirmed that Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father as Supreme Leader, did not appear at any point during the ceremony. He has not been seen publicly since the February 28 attack that killed his father and several other family members.
According to sources close to the family, Mojtaba Khamenei is believed to have been injured in that attack.
The four-month conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States ended after a ceasefire agreement was reached. Iranian officials say the truce could bring significant economic benefits to the country.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that peace talks had been temporarily suspended to allow the mourning ceremonies to take place.
On Sunday, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf attended the funeral prayers.
Masoud Khamenei was seen weeping and wiping away tears with a keffiyeh scarf as the Imam led prayers for the deceased.
Hundreds of thousands of mourners gathered at the ceremony, with many crying while others beat their chests as a traditional expression of grief. Authorities said that around seven million people used the railway system to travel to Tehran over a short period to take part in the ceremonies.
After the events in Tehran, Khamenei’s body will be taken to Qom before being transported to the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. It will then be returned to Iran for burial in Mashhad.
The Iranian government said it has arranged special transportation, food distribution, and accommodation to enable large numbers of citizens to participate in the funeral ceremonies.
