Kigali City urges schools to introduce modern school buses to ease traffic congestion

The leadership of the City of Kigali has called on schools to introduce shared student transport buses in order to reduce traffic congestion caused by parents individually dropping off and picking up their children.

This was announced by the City of Kigali spokesperson, Ntirenganya Emma Claudine, during a media briefing held on April 26, 2026.

She emphasized that every school should have well-maintained and modern buses to transport students, helping to ease traffic congestion.

“Schools should have proper buses that are in good condition. When this program first started, many schools used old buses that had previously been used for public transport, and they would simply repaint them for student use.” She said.

She added that “School buses should not be old; they must be in good condition and preferably new. Schools should invest in quality buses to ensure students travel safely.”

The CEO of Ecofleet Solutions, Rukera Aubin, stated that they are planning to collaborate with the Ministry of Education Rwanda, the Ministry of Infrastructure Rwanda, and schools in Kigali to explore how students can be supported with organized transport systems.

“There may be challenges in how students get to school, but we are working with different stakeholders to identify solutions. Even if parents arrange their own transport, we can support by mapping schools, identifying where students come from across Kigali, and using existing city transport resources to assist in planning.” He said.

Since fuel prices have risen in Rwanda and globally due to tensions linked to Iran, residents have been encouraged to use public transportation to reduce traffic congestion and lower transportation costs.
