According to an official notice, starting Friday, April 24, 2026, parking will no longer be allowed along the road from Hotel Gloria to Nyarugenge Market, through Quartier Commercial up to City Plaza. This change is meant to create space for a bus-only lane, a lane for through traffic, and pedestrian walkways.
Road signs have already been installed to indicate the dedicated bus lane and the lanes for moving vehicles.
On the other hand, parking areas along this road are now empty, as private vehicles are no longer allowed to park there.
The road previously had parking space for up to 140 private vehicles, but drivers have been asked to stop using it to make way for the new bus system.
This measure mainly affects one major road in central Kigali, while other areas such as Quartier Mateus will continue operating normally, including activities around Nyarugenge Market.
Nyarugenge Market remains a busy hub where many traders gather to buy and sell food and beverages, and those activities will continue as usual.
However, small vehicles are no longer allowed to park on the northern entrance road leading toward City Plaza.
Some traders in Quartier Commercial said that the absence of parked cars in front of their shops could improve the visibility of their goods.
Others, especially business owners with cars, expressed concern, saying the change makes it harder for them to access their workplaces due to limited parking options in the city.
Previously, Kigali City had announced plans to introduce dedicated bus lanes along certain roads, along with a circular bus service operating within the city center, connecting areas like Nyarugenge Market and City Plaza, making it easier for people to move around without relying on motorcycle taxis.
Overall, Kigali has introduced these bus-priority lanes to reduce traffic congestion and encourage greater use of public transportation.
