Medvedev made the remarks while returning to Russia from Iran, where he had attended the funeral of the country’s former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
Speaking to Russian journalists, Medvedev argued that the United States had no legitimate reason to launch attacks on Iran, saying that “Iran had never threatened the United States.”
He noted that Iran had been engaged in negotiations with Washington at the time, adding that the strikes reflected what he described as the erosion of international law.
Medvedev also criticized the killing of Iranian officials and large numbers of civilians, including schoolchildren, saying such actions cast a negative light on those responsible for ordering the attacks.
He added that although Iran had endured a difficult period, it had emerged from the conflict “with dignity.” He also said that while parts of Tehran had suffered damage, normal life had largely resumed in the capital.
Medvedev further claimed that during the conflict, Iran realized it possessed a powerful strategic deterrent comparable to nuclear weapons: control over the Strait of Hormuz.
According to him, restrictions on the vital shipping route caused global oil prices to surge, reaching as high as $120 per barrel.
The Russian politician also criticized the sanctions imposed on both Russia and Iran, describing them as “groundless” and contrary to international law.
