Number of Rwandans visiting China Doubled in two years

The developments were revealed by the Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda, Gao Wenqi, during a recent press briefing on relations between Rwanda and China.
On the 55th anniversary of China-Rwanda diplomatic relations, the Embassy held a Media & Think Tank Symposium on April 28.

The Chinese Embassy in Rwanda has announced that the number of Rwandans traveling to China has doubled over the past two years due to easier visa procedures and expanded cooperation between the two countries in trade, education, and knowledge exchange.

Ambassador Gao Wenqi said that more than 3,500 Rwandans visited China in 2023, while the number rose to over 7,000 in 2025.

He described it as “remarkable progress” in people-to-people exchanges between Chinese and Rwandan citizens.

He explained that the increase was driven by several factors, including measures that made it easier for Rwandans to obtain visas.

He said, “Policies aimed at simplifying visa access have played a major role in increasing the number of Rwandans visiting China for business, studies, tourism, and other purposes.”

He added, “What we have observed is that in 2023, more than 3,500 Rwandans visited China, and the number later increased to over 7,000, meaning it doubled.”

Ambassador Gao Wenqi noted that one of the major reforms in visa processing was moving visa services online, allowing applicants to avoid making multiple visits to the embassy.

The Chinese Embassy also suspended fingerprint collection requirements for visa applicants and reduced visa fees by 25%.

Beyond travel, Ambassador Gao Wenqi emphasized that cooperation between China and Rwanda in education, trade, and cultural exchange continues to expand.
