OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Work, a new artificial intelligence agent designed to help professionals handle complex projects, create digital materials, and complete workplace tasks with greater efficiency.
OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT Work on July 9. The new tool combines ChatGPT’s conversational features with Codex technology, enabling users to do more than ask questions by using AI to create practical work materials such as documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and web applications.
OpenAI said ChatGPT Work can gather information from connected applications and workflows, organize tasks into smaller steps, and independently work on projects for extended periods while keeping users informed throughout the process.
The platform is powered by OpenAI’s latest GPT-5.6 model, which the company says improves AI reasoning, especially when handling multi-step assignments and creating materials based on templates and reference files.
Expanding AI Capabilities Beyond Coding
Although Codex was initially developed as a coding assistant for software developers, OpenAI said its use has expanded to other professional fields. More than five million people reportedly use Codex every week, with over one million users applying it for tasks beyond software development.
ChatGPT Work allows professionals without advanced programming skills to use AI-powered coding capabilities through simple instructions. Users can create websites, prepare business presentations, analyze information, develop marketing materials, and manage digital projects.
OpenAI said the tool can support a wide range of workflows, including transforming customer research into marketing strategies, adapting content for different markets, and preparing business materials from multiple sources.
AI Agents Reshaping the Workplace
The launch comes as technology companies increasingly compete to develop AI agents capable of completing complex tasks with limited human involvement.
OpenAI’s latest offering enters a growing market alongside solutions such as Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, which also focuses on helping professionals manage multi-step assignments through artificial intelligence.
The competition reflects a broader transformation in the workplace, where organizations are adopting AI tools to improve productivity, automate routine processes, and support innovation across different sectors.

OpenAI said ChatGPT Work can continue supporting projects through scheduled tasks, allowing users to automate certain workflows even when they are away from their devices.
For example, the tool can organize updates from platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Slack, convert information into updated documents or presentations, and share important changes with teams.
Users remain in control by monitoring progress, providing feedback, adjusting instructions, and approving key actions when needed.
ChatGPT Work is initially available to Pro, Enterprise, and Education users, with wider access planned for Plus and Business subscribers.
OpenAI has also introduced additional features, including a desktop application and website creation capabilities that allow users to build and share websites directly through ChatGPT.
