Sheikh Hamad passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 74. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
In a message posted on X on Sunday, President Kagame described Sheikh Hamad as a visionary leader who transformed Qatar into the influential nation it is today.
“His legacy of service to his people and commitment to fostering friendship and cooperation among nations will endure for generations. During this difficult time, the people of Rwanda and I stand in solidarity with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and our Qatari brothers and sisters,” President Kagame wrote.
Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, overseeing a period of remarkable economic growth and international expansion. Under his leadership, the country became a global energy powerhouse while significantly improving infrastructure, public services, and living standards.
He is widely credited with modernizing Qatar and strengthening its influence in international diplomacy, trade, and investment, largely by leveraging the country’s vast natural gas resources.
Rwanda and Qatar maintain close bilateral relations, particularly in investment, security, and aviation. The two countries have collaborated on military training programs, with Rwandan officers—including pilots—receiving specialized training in Qatar.
Qatar is also a key partner in the development of the Bugesera International Airport, a flagship infrastructure project expected to position Rwanda as a major aviation and transport hub in Africa.
