Rwanda earns over Rwf 15.2 billion from agricultural and livestock exports in one week

The National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB) announced that products exported to international markets between May 18 and May 22, 2026 generated more than Rwf 15.2 billion for Rwanda.

A total of 10,166 tonnes of exports were shipped abroad, including 365 tonnes of coffee which generated Rwf 2.8 billion, 1,011 tonnes of tea worth Rwf 4.1 billion, and 349 tonnes of vegetables that brought in Rwf 622 million.

Fruits exported to international markets totaled 337 tonnes, generating Rwf 503 million, while 16 tonnes of flowers earned the country Rwf 131 million.

Other agricultural products, including tubers, legumes, cereals, and related crops exported to different countries, weighed 7,738 tonnes and generated more than Rwf 6.1 billion. Livestock products accounted for 351 tonnes and earned Rwf 779 million.

Janet Basiima, Director General of Export Market Development and Innovation at National Agricultural Export Development Board, recently stated that tensions between the United States and Iran demonstrated the importance of Rwanda diversifying its export markets.

“The conflict in the Middle East shows us that we must accelerate our efforts, and we were already on the right path in seeking alternative markets instead of relying on a single market for avocados. At the same time, Rwanda is also looking for local solutions. Although we export large quantities of avocados, we are encouraging value addition so that instead of exporting them raw, we can process avocado oil locally and export the finished product,” she said.

Agricultural exports continue to play a major role in Rwanda’s economic growth. In December 2025, Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources announced that agricultural and livestock exports had generated more than $893.1 million for Rwanda in 2025.

Under Rwanda’s second National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), the country aims to increase annual foreign exchange revenues from agricultural and livestock exports to $1.5 billion by 2029.
