Rwandan peacekeepers honored with UN medals for service in South Sudan

Rwandan peacekeepers deployed under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been awarded UN service medals in recognition of their dedication and professionalism in supporting peace and civilian protection efforts in the country.

The medal ceremony took place on Monday, May 25, at the UN Base Camp in Malakal, located in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State. The awards were presented to members of RWANBATT-2, Rwanda’s battalion serving under the UN peacekeeping mission.

During the event, UNMISS Force Commander, Junhui Wu, applauded the Rwandan troops for their discipline, resilience and commitment while operating in one of the country’s most unstable areas.

He noted that the medals reflected the confidence the United Nations and the international community have in the contingent’s ability to carry out its mission professionally under challenging conditions.

Maj Gen Wu further praised the battalion for maintaining strong operational readiness, helping protect civilians and facilitating humanitarian activities in the region. He added that the conduct of the Rwandan troops had positively contributed to the reputation of the peacekeeping mission.

Rwanda’s Senior National Representative in South Sudan, Emmanuel Kanobayire, also commended the contingent for fulfilling its responsibilities with determination despite the difficult environment in which they operate.

According to Col Kanobayire, the medals represent not only successful completion of duty, but also the sacrifice, courage and commitment demonstrated by the peacekeepers in promoting international peace and security.

The ceremony brought together senior UNMISS officials, military leaders and representatives from various peacekeeping contingents operating in Upper Nile State.
