SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage crashes into the moon after drifting in space

The upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has crashed into the Moon after spending months drifting through space.

The impact occurred on Wednesday morning, August 5, 2026, marking another rare case of space hardware unintentionally colliding with the lunar surface.

The rocket stage, weighing approximately 4,000 kilograms (about four metric tons), struck the Moon at high speed, creating a new crater and sending a large cloud of lunar dust into the surrounding area.

Astronomers had predicted that the object would reach the Moon at around 7:35 a.m. British Summer Time (BST). While scientists expected the collision might produce a brief flash of light visible through powerful telescopes, observers did not detect any immediate visual confirmation. Researchers say orbiting spacecraft may capture images of the newly formed impact site in the coming days.

The object was the upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket launched in January 2025 during a mission that delivered a lunar lander toward the Moon.

In most SpaceX missions, Falcon 9 upper stages are designed to either burn up in Earth’s atmosphere or fall harmlessly into the ocean after completing their mission. However, because this mission required additional energy to reach the Moon, the rocket stage was left in deep space after exhausting its fuel.

According to scientists, SpaceX had not planned for the rocket stage to collide with the Moon. Instead, gravitational forces and the influence of the Sun gradually altered its trajectory over time. With no fuel remaining, the stage was unable to perform any maneuver to avoid the impact.

Although the collision poses no danger to Earth, researchers say it offers a valuable opportunity to study how impacts affect the Moon’s surface and could improve understanding of lunar geology. The event may also provide useful data for future lunar exploration missions.

NASA said the impact does not present any risk to Earth. However, experts noted that it highlights the growing challenge of managing space debris as more missions venture beyond Earth’s orbit.

SpaceX and NASA are continuing discussions on ways to reduce the risk of spacecraft components ending up in unintended locations, particularly as NASA prepares for long-term human missions and sustained operations on the Moon in the years ahead.
