Trump expected in China this week for high-stakes talks with Xi Jinping

United States President Donald Trump is expected to visit China this week for talks with President Xi Jinping.

So far, no exact date has been announced for Trump’s arrival in China, but the White House confirmed that the visit will take place this week.

Trump last visited China in November 2017 during his first term as U.S. president. This new trip is attracting significant attention as it will be his first visit to China during his second term in office.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump was asked about the issue of Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory, while the United States continues to sell weapons to Taiwan as though it were an independent country.

Trump said the Taiwan issue would be among the topics discussed with Xi Jinping, acknowledging that the Chinese leader does not want the U.S. to continue supplying arms to Taiwan.

“We will discuss it with President Xi. President Xi does not want us to do that (sell weapons to Taiwan), but we will talk about it. That is one of many issues we will discuss,” Trump said.

The talks come after Trump approved an arms package worth more than $11 billion for Taiwan in December 2025.

He also expressed confidence that tensions between Taiwan and China would not lead to war under his leadership.

“I don’t think it will happen. I think everything will work out well. I have a very good relationship with President Xi, and he knows I do not want that to happen,” Trump said.

In addition to Taiwan, Xi and Trump are expected to discuss the case of Jimmy Lai, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in February 2026 after being convicted of collaborating with foreign forces to undermine China’s national security and using speech considered seditious.

Jimmy Lai has maintained that he was advocating for a more democratic China.

“Jimmy Lai caused major problems in China. He tried to do what he believed was right, but it did not go well. He ended up in prison, but many people believe he should be released, and I also want to see him freed. I will raise this issue during the talks,” Trump said.

Trump is also expected to be accompanied on the trip by several prominent business leaders, including Elon Musk, Tim Cook, and Kelly Ortberg, signaling that trade and business cooperation will also feature prominently in the discussions.

During the visit, China is expected to announce plans to purchase a large number of aircraft from Boeing. China last made a major Boeing aircraft purchase in 2017.
