According to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, the call took place on July 4, coinciding with the United States’ Independence Day celebrations. Ushakov said the discussion focused primarily on the conflict in Ukraine and broader international security issues.
He stated that Trump reaffirmed his desire to help bring the war to an end as quickly as possible, emphasizing the importance of reaching a peaceful settlement through dialogue and diplomacy.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also confirmed that he had spoken with Trump. Zelenskyy said the two leaders discussed the battlefield situation and Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to defend its territory against Russian forces.
During the conversation, Zelenskyy stressed the importance of continued international support for Ukraine and said he looked forward to further discussions with Trump during the upcoming North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit.
Kremlin adviser Ushakov accused Ukraine and its European allies of seeking to prolong and intensify the conflict rather than pursuing a negotiated settlement. He also claimed that Russian forces continue to make gains on the battlefield.
Ukraine rejected those claims, insisting that the cities mentioned by Russian officials remain under Ukrainian control and that its forces continue to resist Russian advances.
Russia has repeatedly maintained that any lasting peace agreement must include recognition of the self-determination of the Donbas region, a position that Ukraine has consistently rejected as a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Kremlin also said that U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are expected to continue diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a political solution and are prepared to visit Moscow for further consultations.
In addition to Ukraine, the two leaders reportedly discussed broader geopolitical issues, including ongoing diplomatic contacts between the United States and Iran. Putin expressed optimism that those talks could help lay the foundation for a long-term agreement and contribute to greater stability in the Middle East.
The latest high-level conversations underscore renewed diplomatic activity surrounding the war in Ukraine, even as fighting continues on the ground. While significant differences remain between Moscow and Kyiv over the conditions for peace, the parallel discussions involving Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy have fueled hopes that new negotiations could eventually help reduce tensions and move the conflict toward a political resolution.
