US President Donald Trump, who is widely known for his confrontational rhetoric and criticism of other world leaders, appeared notably humble during his ongoing visit to China, where he openly praised President Xi Jinping.
This is Trump’s first visit to China since 2017, making the trip historically significant. It comes at a time when China and the United States have frequently clashed, particularly over trade issues.
During talks between the two leaders, Trump used a softer tone than he is usually known for when dealing with other heads of state.
Trump said he has a good relationship with Xi Jinping and described him as an exceptional leader, even though some people dislike hearing him say that.
“We have known each other for a long time. It is the longest relationship our countries have had between a president and his counterpart, and to me that is valuable. We have a good relationship and whenever there were problems, we solved them. I would call you or you would call me. People do not know this, but every time we had an issue, we resolved it quickly. Together we will have a great future,” Trump said.
He went on to praise Xi Jinping as a strong leader who has overseen major transformations in China.
“I respect China and the work you have done. You are an exceptional leader and I tell everyone that. Sometimes people do not like hearing me say it, but I say it because it is true. I always speak honestly,” he added.
Trump also said he hopes China and the United States can cooperate more in trade and investment.
The visit comes as China continues to make remarkable progress globally in areas such as economic growth, technology, infrastructure, science, military development, and innovation.
Because of China’s rapid progress, analysts say it may only take a few decades before it surpasses the United States as the world’s largest economy.
