Trump says Iran spared eight women protesters after his appeal

Donald Trump announced that, following his request, eight women who had participated in protests against the rising cost of living in Iran and were reportedly facing execution, have had their death sentences lifted.

On April 21, 2026, Trump had called on Iranian authorities to halt the executions of these women, stating that the issue would be part of discussions on how to end the ongoing conflict.

He said, “To Iran’s leaders, as you engage with my representatives: I would be pleased to hear that you have released these women, and I know they will respect that decision. I strongly urge you not to harm them. It would be a good start to our talks.”

A day after making the appeal, on April 22, 2026, Trump stated that Iran had responded positively and that the women would not be executed.

He said, “Four will be released immediately, and the other four will be detained for one month. I am very pleased that Iran and its leaders have listened to my request as President of the United States and removed this death penalty.”

The protests began in December 2025, sparked by severe currency devaluation, with about 1.5 million Iranian rials equaling one US dollar by January 2026.

They later evolved into demonstrations against the Iranian government, followed by intensified conflict in which Israel and the United States carried out strikes on Iran. The attacks reportedly resulted in casualties, including Ali Khamenei, who had been Iran’s Supreme Leader.
