The escalating conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran has raised uncertainty over the participation of Iran’s men’s national football team, Team Melli, in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, cohosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Rising Tensions and Military Strikes
Since Saturday, Iran has responded to US and Israeli attacks by striking military bases across the Middle East with missiles and drones. The conflict has already claimed at least 555 lives in Iran, 10 in Israel, three US soldiers, and 38 people in other nations across the region.
Iran’s World Cup Schedule
The World Cup, set to begin on June 11, has Iran in Group G with Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. All matches are scheduled on the US West Coast:

- June 21: Belgium vs Iran – Los Angeles

Uncertainty Over Team Melli’s Participation
According to Al Jazeera, despite the schedule, Iran’s football federation president, Mehdi Taj, admitted the team’s participation is uncertain.
“What is certain is that after this attack, we cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope,” Taj told local portal Varzesh3.
High-ranking sports officials in Iran are currently evaluating the situation, with a final decision expected soon.
FIFA’s Response
FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafstrom said the organization is monitoring developments and will continue communications with host governments.
“It is premature to comment in detail, but we will monitor developments around all issues around the world,” he said.
Challenges for Fans and Possible Replacement
Even if Iran participates, travel restrictions may complicate entry for supporters. Should Iran withdraw, another Asian nation, likely the United Arab Emirates, could take its place to ensure smooth tournament logistics.

Iran, ranked 20th in the world and second in Asia, has qualified for seven World Cups but has never progressed past the group stage. The upcoming tournament could mark a historic moment amid geopolitical tensions.
