The announcement was made by Karex CEO Goh Miah Kiat during a media interview, where he explained that condom production has become increasingly difficult since the conflict began in February 2026.
Karex is the largest condom manufacturer globally, producing more than five billion units annually and supplying major brands such as Durex and Trojan.
The war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran began on February 28, 2026, when U.S. strikes in Tehran killed several senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
One of the most significant consequences of the conflict has been the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route through which about 20% of the world’s petroleum supply passes. Iran shut down this route, leading to a sharp rise in global oil prices, reaching historic highs.
Karex noted that producing condoms requires materials such as ammonia and silicone, both linked to petroleum byproducts. The disruption in oil supply chains has therefore made it harder to access these essential materials.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Goh said demand for condoms has surged by 30% this year, even as supply challenges persist.
“In difficult times like war, demand for condoms tends to increase significantly because people are uncertain about the future, such as whether they will still have jobs next year. Having a child during such times increases financial responsibility,” he explained.
The war has also driven up global airfare prices, with tickets increasing by about 24% compared to last year due to broader economic disruptions.
