Zimbabwe’s gold industry is maintaining strong growth in 2026, with rising production reinforcing the country’s position as a leading gold producer in Africa amid favourable global demand and improving sector performance.
Official data shows that gold deliveries exceeded 12,600 kilogrammes between January and April 2026, driven by higher output from large-scale mining operations and continued expansion in production capacity.
The sector began the year on a strong note, as April shipments from leading mining companies rose by over 28% compared to the same period last year, reaching approximately 1,213 kilogrammes. This increase is attributed to enhanced operational efficiency, continued investment in mining activities, and consistent improvements in production processes across various sites.
Gold continues to play a central role in Zimbabwe’s economy, supporting export earnings and contributing to the stability of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency system. Its importance as a reliable economic anchor has strengthened as the country advances efforts to enhance financial stability and build foreign currency reserves.
Positive global market conditions, including sustained demand for safe-haven assets, further support the sector’s performance. Continued central bank purchases and steady investor interest in bullion have helped maintain strong global prices, creating a supportive environment for producers.
This performance builds on a strong showing in 2025, when Zimbabwe’s mining sector generated approximately US$4.61 billion in gold exports. During the same period, total deliveries to the national refinery reached about 46.73 tonnes, exceeding targets and highlighting the sector’s consistent and robust performance, according to BI Africa reports.
Looking ahead, the industry is expected to sustain its positive trajectory, supported by ongoing investment, expanding exploration activities, and improving operational capacity across large-scale mines. Analysts note that these developments could further enhance output and strengthen export performance in 2026.
Zimbabwe’s gold sector continues to emerge as a key pillar of economic resilience, contributing to foreign exchange stability, fiscal support, and long-term economic growth.
