A military aircraft transported the suspects from Haiti to the United States on Sunday, according to Jason Reding Quiñones, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.
Quiñones described the transfer as another major step toward uncovering the truth and ensuring that those suspected of involvement in President Moïse’s death are held accountable.
“Today marks the next significant step in the pursuit of justice for the assassination of the President,” he said.
In May, four Florida men were convicted of conspiring to assassinate President Moïse. Prosecutors said they had recruited approximately 24 former Colombian soldiers and provided them with money, weapons, ammunition and protective equipment to carry out the attack.
President Jovenel Moïse, 53, was shot dead at his home in the hills above the capital, Port-au-Prince, in July 2021. His death created a major leadership vacuum and further strengthened criminal gangs that were already influential in Haiti.
Investigations into his assassination have been conducted by authorities in Haiti and the United States, with several people already brought to justice. However, questions and competing theories remain about who organized the plot and why President Moïse was killed.
Prosecutor Quiñones said 30 people have so far been charged with offences related to President Moïse’s assassination.
