Russian officials said the attack took place as the country was concluding its parliamentary elections.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described it as the largest drone attack ever carried out against the city.
Sobyanin said the attack damaged the Moscow oil refinery and a residential building. In the wider Moscow region, Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported that two people were killed and 20 others injured. The victims were a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country used various types of missiles and drones in the attack, including Ukrainian-made missiles known as Flamingo and Pelican, targeting energy and transportation infrastructure.
Zelenskyy said the operations were intended to put pressure on Russia’s economy, arguing that the targeted companies help finance its war efforts.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian president said his country continued to defend itself against Russian attacks.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had intercepted 1,110 Ukrainian drones across the country, as well as over Crimea and the waters of the Black Sea.
Sergei Sobyanin also said that 450 drones heading toward Moscow had been shot down before reaching the city’s airspace.
The attack comes as the war between Ukraine and Russia continues to be marked by frequent drone strikes.
