Trump announced the measure on his Truth Social platform, accusing the three media outlets of publishing what he described as “fake news.”
Later, when asked why the outlets were being denied access to the White House, Trump said it was because they report “fake news.”
He also suggested that similar restrictions could be imposed on other media organisations, including The New York Times and The Washington Post.
CNN and Politico have condemned Trump’s announcement.
CNN said the US Constitution protects its right to gather and report news without interference. Politico, meanwhile, said it would continue covering the White House while defending the constitutional rights granted to the media.
The announcement is the latest development in Trump’s long-running disputes with news organisations over access to the White House.
In 2018, his administration revoked CNN correspondent Jim Acosta’s White House press credentials. A court later ordered that the credentials be restored.
In 2025, the White House also temporarily barred the Associated Press from participating in the presidential press pool. That decision was subsequently challenged in court.
The latest restrictions have raised renewed questions about press freedom, media access and the relationship between the Trump administration and critical news organisations.
