The two leaders will meet in New York on Monday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
The office of President Trump announced that the meeting is scheduled for Monday at 5:35 p.m. New York time (21:35 GMT).
The talks will come shortly after France and the United States expressed differences over issues including human rights, foreign policy and matters concerning their respective national interests.
In recent months, relations between Paris and Washington have been characterized by disagreements. In late July 2026, France criticized the United States for refusing to support the renewal of Volker Türk’s term as head of the United Nations human rights office.
France said the United States had previously been regarded as a leading example in human rights but that the situation had changed.
The remarks were not well received in Washington, with the United States expressing disappointment over France’s statements. Following the dispute, the US delayed approving Aurélien Lechevallier, who had been nominated by Macron to serve as France’s new ambassador to Washington.
France later clarified that the disagreement was limited to the UN election and should not undermine relations between the two countries. This increased confidence that the issue surrounding the appointment of France’s ambassador to the United States would be resolved, which eventually happened.
Meanwhile, concerns also emerged after Trump shared an image on social media showing a map of parts of North America covered by the American flag, including Canada, Greenland, Mexico and the French-administered islands of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. Macron subsequently arranged a visit to the islands, saying it was intended to demonstrate respect for national sovereignty.
Before travelling to New York, Macron visited Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon in the Atlantic Ocean, where he met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Although France and the United States have been long-standing allies, disagreements over international politics, tariffs and conduct within NATO have highlighted challenges in their relationship in recent years.
The Trump-Macron meeting in New York is expected to provide an opportunity to discuss issues that have caused tensions between Washington and Paris.
