Kigali introduces digital bus signs to help passengers track arrival times

Digital information displays are being installed at bus stops across Kigali to help passengers know when buses are expected to arrive, in a move aimed at reducing long and uncertain waiting times.

Ecofleet Solutions has initially installed the digital signs at Sonatube in Kicukiro District and Gishushu in Gasabo District, both of which serve as bus waiting points.

The technology, which is currently being tested, displays the number of minutes remaining before a bus arrives, as well as the bus’s identification number.

Public transport users have welcomed the development, describing it as a much-needed improvement in a country experiencing rapid development.

However, some passengers say the system still needs adjustments, pointing to cases where the displayed arrival times do not match the actual waiting time. They report waiting for as long as 20 minutes even when the screen indicates that a bus is just one minute away.

One passenger said: “It shows you the estimated time and tells you that the bus will arrive in one minute. But I have experienced this about twice, and it is surprising. Imagine waiting for around 20 minutes!”
