The strikes took place on Monday, November 2, 2026, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The officials said the attacks were part of a series of targeted military strikes that the United States has been carrying out against Iran for several weeks, following a period of relative calm in the fighting between the two sides.
One of the officials explained that the US military was trying to keep the strikes low-profile to avoid giving the impression that Washington intended to resume major military operations against Iran.
The Pentagon was contacted by Agence France-Presse (AFP) for comment but referred journalists to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which had not immediately responded.
Iran’s state news agency IRNA had earlier reported that five explosions were heard on Qeshm Island, while residents also spotted two aircraft in the sky.
The strikes came a day before the United States holds midterm elections for seats in Congress, scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
They also occurred shortly after President Trump expressed hope that an agreement with Iran could be reached.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday, Trump said Iran wanted to reach an agreement as soon as possible and that there was a possibility of achieving one.
The war involving Iran, the United States and Israel began on February 28, 2026, when the US and Israel launched attacks against Iran.
Since then, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for international trade, and has carried out attacks on vessels attempting to pass through without its authorisation.
Although military operations had been largely suspended under a ceasefire since September 2026, the United States and Israel have intensified their threats against Iran in recent days.
The latest developments come as the United States prepares for crucial elections under President Trump, while political uncertainty also persists in Israel following its elections.
