Speaking to Royal FM, Kunda said the ranking is based on Kinyarwanda audio data, including words and sentences, collected through the participation of citizens and various institutions since 2018.
“One of the exciting things we have achieved is that Kinyarwanda is among the languages with a large amount of collected data. Since 2018, citizens and institutions have contributed to collecting this Kinyarwanda data. Globally, our language now ranks fourth in terms of the availability of such data,” she said.
Kunda explained that the collected information, known as voice datasets, consists of recorded Kinyarwanda words and sentences.
She said the availability of these datasets makes it easier to integrate Kinyarwanda into various artificial intelligence applications, allowing users to receive responses in the language.
“The large volume of this data helps us make it easier to integrate Kinyarwanda into different artificial intelligence tools, enabling them to respond to you in Kinyarwanda,” she said.
Kunda encouraged users of AI applications such as ChatGPT and Claude to try interacting with them in Kinyarwanda to assess how well the systems can understand and respond in the language.
She noted that there had been noticeable improvements in the applications’ ability to use Kinyarwanda compared with three years ago.
“If you used these applications three years ago, you may notice improvements in how well they use Kinyarwanda,” she said.
However, Kunda did not identify the platform or research study underpinning the reported fourth-place ranking, nor did she disclose the total volume of Kinyarwanda data collected so far.
