Kagame holds talks with Prime Ministers of Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas and Sri Lanka

President Paul Kagame has held talks with the prime ministers of Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas and Sri Lanka, among other leaders attending the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

This was announced in a statement issued by the Office of the President, Village Urugwiro, in the early hours of November 4, 2026.

“On his third day at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2026), President Kagame held discussions with Prime Minister Gaston Browne of the host country, Prime Minister Philip Davis of the Bahamas, and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya of Sri Lanka,” the statement said.

The statement also noted that President Kagame met with Prime Minister Godwin Friday of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini of Eswatini.

On November 3, the Head of State also attended the official opening ceremony of CHOGM 2026, held at the National Performing Arts Centre in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.

At the ceremony, President Kagame joined the host country’s Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, King Charles III, Commonwealth Heads of State and Government, and other international dignitaries.

This year’s CHOGM is the 28th edition of the summit and is taking place from November 1 to 4, 2026, under the theme, “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”

The meeting has brought together 30 Heads of State and Government, alongside ministers, private-sector representatives, civil society organisations and young people.

The first CHOGM was held in Singapore in 1971, replacing meetings that had brought together prime ministers of countries with historical ties to Britain. Since then, the summit has been hosted by different Commonwealth member states.

Rwanda joined the Commonwealth on November 29, 2009, becoming one of the countries that joined the organisation without having been colonised by Britain.

In 2022, Rwanda hosted CHOGM in Kigali from June 20 to 25. Discussions at the time focused on economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic, innovation and strengthening cooperation.

President Kagame served as Commonwealth Chairperson-in-Office from 2022 until October 2024, when the role was handed over to Samoa, which hosted the summit in Apia.
