Students of the Rwanda Defence Force Junior Command and Staff Course (Intake 26) have embarked on a three-day study tour focused on the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) Liberation War. Scheduled from 8 to 10 April 2026, the tour aims to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of how the RPA helped end the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and restore governance in Rwanda.
The program began at the Kagitumba border post, where cadets received briefings from senior RDF generals and commanders who were directly involved in the liberation struggle. Through these sessions, they gained first-hand insights into the challenges, strategies, and leadership decisions that shaped Rwanda’s path to liberation.
Throughout the tour, participants examine key battles and military operations while analyzing the strategic, operational, and tactical choices made during the campaign. By studying these historical examples, they can draw critical lessons in military planning, operational leadership, and battlefield decision-making that remain relevant to today’s military professionals.
Moreover, the study tour provides a broader historical and human perspective, emphasizing the bravery, resilience, and sacrifices of those who fought to free the country from oppressive governance. Cadets are encouraged to reflect on the social, political, and ethical dimensions of military leadership, thereby connecting Rwanda’s history with the responsibilities of modern officers.
In addition, by combining practical lessons with historical context, the study tour helps RDF leaders reflect on the past, assess their strategic skills, and apply the lessons learned in decision-making. As Rwanda continues to strengthen its security and defense capabilities, programs like this emphasize the importance of connecting history with practical leadership and strategy.
