Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has praised Arda Guler’s quality and creativity as the young midfielder competes for more playing time at the Spanish club.
Guler, 21, came off the bench during Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. He helped the team regain control after Rayo put Madrid under pressure.
However, Guler faces strong competition for a regular place in Mourinho’s starting team. Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham remain key players, while Guler is also competing with Yan Diomande and Brahim Diaz for playing time.
Mourinho said Guler has made major progress since joining Madrid from Fenerbahce in 2023. He highlighted the midfielder’s vision, decision-making, creativity and ability to bring balance to the team.
The Portuguese coach also pointed to Guler’s strong connection with Mbappe. The pair combined effectively for Madrid’s fourth goal against Rayo.
“I can definitely say ‘top, top’,” Mourinho said jokingly when asked about the young midfielder’s development.
While Guler has earned praise, Mourinho said Vinicius Junior still has work to do to reach his best level. The Brazilian winger has scored only once this season.
Mourinho said Vinicius remains important to the team but needs to rediscover the goalscoring form that has made him one of Madrid’s most dangerous attackers.
Real Madrid currently sit second in La Liga, three points behind leaders Barcelona, who have won all their matches so far.
